WBM (Warehouse Bin Management) - Bin Replenishment and Put Away explanation

This article explains the hierarchy the system uses for bin selection during both Bin Replenishment and Bin Put Away.

Replenishment - bin location search hierarchy

When replenishing, the system follows this sequence:

    1. Identify eligible bins for replenishment
      1. From allStockLocations, the system gathers bins that can be used as receiving/picking bins.
    2. Check bins currently in use for the stock location
      1. Uses allUsingBins for the applicable stock location.
    3. Check receipting bins for the stock location
      1. Uses allReceiptingBins for the applicable stock location.
    4. Use the stock location storage profile
      1. Checks the General storage profile for:
        1. Location picking hierarchy
        2. Location receipting hierarchy
    5. Get receiving bin balances
    6. Determine the ‘to’ bin location
      1. Uses all bin usages to select the final bin to be used for replenishment.

          Put-Away – bin search and capacity logic

          1. X = incoming inventory quantity
          2. Y= bin capacity (Stock Item Bin Type maximum quantity)
          3. Z= current inventory in the bin
          4. Includes future transactions that are saved but not yet confirmed.

          The put away logic works in this order:

          1. Search existing bins for this stock item in active locations
            1. For the Stock Item and allActiveStockLocations, the system looks for a bin where X ≤ (Y − Z)
            2. If found, the bin can hold the full incoming quantity X.
          2. If no suitable partially filled bin is found
            1. Search allStockLocations for an empty bin where X ≤ Y
            2. This search uses the Receipting Hierarchy (see related KB article).
          3. If no bin can take the full quantity X
            1. Search allStockLocations for an empty bin using the Receipting Hierarchy, even if it can only take part of X.
            2. This results in a remaining quantity X − Y₁ where Y₁ is the capacity of the bin just used.
          4. Repeat until all stock is receipted
            1. Replace X with the remaining quantity (X − Y₁).
            2. Restart the search at the Stock Item and allActiveStockLocations using the new X.
            3. Continue this loop until the full incoming quantity has been put away.

          The system always applies these hierarchies in sequence:

            • Replenishment hierarchy (to select bins for replenishment).
            • Put Away hierarchy (to decide where incoming stock is receipted).
